前财长苏纳克在2位对手，即前首相约翰逊和内阁成员摩丹特先后退出竞选下，成为唯一的合格候选人后，周一自动当选新一任保守党党魁。

这意味苏纳克将接替辞职的特拉斯，成为新一任英国首相。这亦将是英国史上首位印度裔首相，也是第一位非白人首相。

苏纳克获得保守党内逾100名议员支持，取得角逐党魁资格。

苏纳克1980年出生于英国南安普顿，2015年成为保守党议员，2020年2月13日成为英国财长。2022年7月5日，因对时任首相约翰逊的领导失去信心，苏纳克宣布从政府辞职。
