选委会宣布，砂拉越州选举将在12月6日提名，18日投票,竞选期共12天。至于提前投票日则落在12月14日。

选委会主席拿督阿都干尼周三（24日）在砂拉越召开会议，商讨砂拉越选举的筹备工作后，宣布州选日期。
砂拉越州议会员原本在今年6月7日届满，但因新冠肺炎疫情严峻，国家元首苏丹阿都拉陛下于今年7月31日宣布砂拉越紧急状态从8月2日持续到明年2月2日，不过，陛下在11月3日御准提前终止砂拉越紧急状态。因此砂拉越需依法在60天内举行州选。
砂拉越共有82个州议席。
