GEORGE TOWN, Aug 21 (Bernama) — The Penang Government is appealing to the federal government to fast track approval of the expansion on the current Penang International Airport.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the airport had currently reached its maximum capacity of 6.5 million users while a further expansion was needed for the future.
“Currently, the airport looks like a night market as it is too crowded and we hope the relevant authorities will give its approval soon,” he said during the official launch of the road expansion in Air Itam here today.
He added that the Penang Government had written to the transport ministry several times on the matter to request for an expansion from 6.5 million users to 10 million.
The airport was last upgraded in 2012, with a total cost of RM250 million, where the airport’s passenger capacity was increased from 3.5 million to five million in the expansion while the number of parking bays for aircraft and car parks also increased.
