《路透》报导，白宫官员表示，美国第46任总统拜登宣誓就职后，将由史密斯暂代国务卿职务，直到布林肯在联邦参议院的人事案通过。据了解，没有任何迹象显示布林肯的人事案遇到困难，史密斯只是暂代职务。
报导提到，史密斯在2018年被任命为外交人员学校负责人，该学校主要为美国外交人员进行培训，并拥有国务院最高外交级别职业大使的头衔。
58岁的布林肯是资深外交专家，与拜登关系亲近，曾在欧巴马政府时期担任副国务卿、副国家安全顾问。
