JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 24 (Bernama) – The Drug Prevention Association of Malaysia (Pemadam) plans to organise the Trainer of Trainers (TOT) programme next month for university students to create new and young activists to mobilise the association.
Its president, Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, said for starters, the programme, which would be managed by the National Anti-Drug Agency, targeted 500 university students nationwide.
“They will be given training, to identify the form and types of drugs, as well as their effects , and also the rehabilitation activities for drug abusers.
“We will also TOT to secondary school to reach out and be good friends of the students,” he told reporters after launching the 2018 Anti-Drug Run 2018 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) here last night.
Nur Jazlan, who is also Deputy Home Minister and Member of Parliament for Pulai, said he hoped students under the TOT programme would continue to be anti-drug activists even after graduating from universities.
He said that in order to attract more young people to be the movers of Pemadam, the association planned to create a the national Pemadam youth vice presidential post at its general meeting in the middle of this year.
He said Pemadam was aware that its leadership line-up was lacking in young movers as most of the leaders were chosen since the 70s and 80s, who were now aged, and thus unlikely to attract young people.
“This new post is created at the Pemadam stage to attract young people to make them the main movers in Pemadam. They must be under 30 years of age.
“They will be chosen by the public via online. Pemadam is formulating an online selection system to choose its young icons,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nur Jazlan said Pemadam was in the process of obtaining the approval of the Higher Education Ministry to expand the anti-drug subject introduced in UTM since 1998 to all public and private universities in the country.
